Belgique Vs Belgie: the last chance?

General elections held in Belgium yesterday confirmed the victory of Dutch speaking nationalist party N-VA and raised the fear of a new instability period with a lack of social policies in a time where the economic crisis is at a critical point.

After the fall of the preceding government over the withdrawal of the Open VLD from the government the King dissolved the legislature and called for new elections. The New Flemish Alliance, led by Bart de Wever, appeared as the major party with 27 seats, just one more than the Socialist Party, led by Elio Di Rupio, which was the largest party in the Wallonia region.

The two parties are now presumed to initiate talks, despite having a completely different view of most political subjects. Final results from the national electoral commission proved that the N-VA had gathered 17.4 per cent of the national vote, almost 4 points clear of the PS, with 13.7. In total, N-VA and PS have more than a third of the parliament and will be able to rule if they reach an agreement.

A few weeks ago the N-VA spoke about its separatist possibilities, but only some days ago De Wever alleged that, in case of their victory, he would be disposed to concede the post of prime minister to a French speaker if that assured they would move towards a structure that proportionate stronger regions.

But, as many specialists defend, it is more than the future of this government that is on the table, but the whole Belgium as a country.

Concerning the anti-capitalist left, on the French speaking side, the PTB list (Working party) moves from 0,79% to 2,07% and the Front des Gauches (PC-LCR-LSP-Parti Humaniste...) that was presenting for the first time) obtained 1,15 % of the votes; in the Flemish side, the PVDA (Flemish name of the PTB) obtained 1,35% of the votes and the LSP obtained 0,20%. The new "Front des Gauches" did not present lists in this side of the country.

For the election of representatives for the Chamber, the new Front des Gauches that only presented in Wallonie and in Brussels obtained 0,33 % of the expressed votes at the national level, (around 1% of the French votes) and the PTB obtained 0,61 des voix  (around 2% of the French votes) three time its result of 2007. The PVDA (Flemish part of the PTB) progressed also from 0,57 to 0,78 % of the voted of the national level (around 2% of the Flemish votes).

The Greens maintained approximately its previous result but the extreme right and the liberals were defeated in these elections, losing more than four perceptual points.
