Evo Morales party regains ground in local and regional elections
The Bolivian President had another electoral victory on last Sunday in the local and regional elections.
Morales declared that "this has been a great triumph because, in 2005, MAS had only obtained three Governors and has now increased up to 100% with six of the nine councils, and three mayors of the ten largest in the country".
President Morales uttered its willingness to work with the opposition, but asked them to recognize that the process of change that leads his party in Bolivia "is unstoppable".
The MAS party (Movimiento al Socialismo) won six of the nine regions of the country, but the opposition still remained its domain in seven major cities. According to Jorge Silva, MAS spokesperson, the problem could have been related to the fact of choosing candidates that "were not very well known by the citizens".
La Paz and El Alto were gained by another formation that has emerged in the last elections but that has its origins in Bolivia Livre movement: the “Sin miedo” Party, whose secretary-general remains as the mayor of La Paz.
The results of yesterday gave dominance to MAS in La Paz, Cochabamba, Oruro and Potosí, and showed that Pando and Chuquisaca were recovered, but the party remained limited in some of the big cities.
