20 000 in Madrid streets against Zapatero austerity policies
More than 20 000 people demonstrated on Sunday, March 20, following the appeal of Izquierda Unida, on the streets of Madrid to protest against the anti-social measures put in place by the Zapatero government.
Freezing of pensions, facilitations of redundancies, lower salaries for civil servants, constant attacks against pensions, cuts in State spending including on health, education and social assistance, threats against the collective negotiation instruments... This is the balance sheet of the past months. "These measures that are presented as inevitable are absolutely not truth, on the contrary they promote the great economic powers" indicates Izquierda Unida in its manifestation appeal. "Not a single measure was taken to make pay the crisis to its real responsible" could also be read.
In a public act which took place in Puerta del Sol after the event, and according to a well-established tradition, Cayo Lara, Secretary General of Izquierda Unida, called on people to "fill the city councils and regional parliaments with values of the left ".
It is already on the next May 22 that regional and municipal elections will happen. A large number of PSOE voters feel cheated by the Zapatero government. "But Izquierda Unida is there, we are ready to be the answer to the crisis" underlines Cayo Lara.
Representatives of Izquierda Unida answered to the attacks of the media accusing them of being a force of attack: "we are not the “NO” Organization, we are the force of the 'YES'." Yes to employment with rights and dignity; Yes to the right to housing; Yes to fair remuneration negotiations; Yes to a European social pact; Yes to sovereignty and full democracy; Yes to renewable energy (...) ".
“The Left Party welcomes this successful event and will fight alongside Izquierda Unida and the Party of the European left to fight the criminal decisions of Governments and social liberals who run Europe. The bad days will end! The peoples of Europe supported by the left will show it!”, French “Parti de Gauche” has declared this morning.
