A great victory for the Egyptian people

The drive out of President Hosni Mubarak was an “astonishing victory” achieved by the Egyptian people after 18 days of intensive protest, in the name of democracy, freedom and justice and independent Egyptian governance that can correspond to the people’s aspirations.

As activists in Cairo defended, “this will mean a humane opening for international justice based on historical truth freed from the privileged veto over monopolised public information and war-debt bondage to ethically incompatible ancient usurers.”

The European Left Party congratulates the courage of these amazing women and men, young people who fought for freedom and democracy in their country and reminded that they are the ones who make the history of their nation.

All those who, throughout the world are in solidarity with the Egyptian people in their revolution to take their destiny in their hand, wish that the state of emergency in force since 1981, has finally ended and that the fall of the despot quickly allows the beginning of a democratic transition and the holding of free elections.

The EL will develop the solidarity and support the democratic and progress forces of Egypt who act for a society with rights, social justice and freedom.

Egyptian military officials are preparing to ban strikes from today, clamming that they would do everything in their power to put a stop to “chaos and disorder” as Tahrir Square emptied at the moment of former President Hosni Mubarak’s departure on Friday. On Sunday, the military dissolved parliament, suspended the constitution, and promised to conduct the way for free and fair elections. The military are supposed to stay in charge for a transitory period of six months or until the end of elections. Mohammed Hussein Tantawi, the supreme military council chief and former Mubarak's defence minister is the present head of state and will represent Egypt in its diplomatic negotiations.
