why equality is better for everyone?

The unequal income distribution and the anti regulation schemes brought by the neo liberal policies have a real social impact in every sector of economy, directly and indirectly. To prove the extraordinary relation between social radiance and health, along with the necessity of Left oriented strategies that promote Equality in current societies, GUE/NGL promoted a public audition with the presence of Richard Wilkinson.

Based on WHO data, the British researcher in social inequalities and the social determinants of health, Richard Wilkinson, wrote the book Spirit level, in which he explains that societies with more a equal distribution of incomes have better health outcomes than ones in which the gap between richest and poorest parts society is greater.

“The balance of equal societies benefits the whole system, the individualist approach is not healthy and politicians have to be determined to change the neo liberal policies and to promote the equal distribution of rights”, said Lothar Bisky, GUE/NGL President, adding that “Egypt is a visible proof that the capitalist system has failed again and that the mainstream politics can change to a more equal and just world”.

Health and social problems are worse in more unequal countries, as the several different indicators show repeatedly in the same countries: “life expectancy, mental illness, propensity to commit suicide, infant mortality, imprisonment, and drugs use is much higher in countries with greater inequalities”, the researcher defended. USA surged the country with higher levels concerning these indicators, just followed by Portugal.

On the other hand, social mobility is much more likely to happen in more equal countries, according to the Richard Wilkinson, “if you want to live the American dream, you should go to Denmark or Finland”, which are the countries with the higher rates of mobility between social classes, contrary to USA, where it is much more difficult to children to obtain equal opportunities and to find a true social mobility in their lives.
