“the Election of the President of Belarus cannot be recognized as free and fair”

The Belarus Left “Fair World” Party, member of the European Left, together with international observers, have concluded that Belarus didn’t hold a free and fair Presidential election and have shown that there is no real progress in bringing closer electoral practice to the international democratic standards of conducting free and fair elections.
According the several opposition parties many violations of electoral legislation were registered during all stages of the election process and the ballot has been heavily rigged in Lukashenko’s favour to give him a victory by a massive margin.

The Belarus Left “Fair World” Party advanced that the Central Election Commission (ECE) of Belarus, in violation of the Electoral Code, “has illegally registered a signatures collection group in support of A. G. Lukashenko and did not accept the suggestions from coordinators of campaign “For Fair Election 2010” and other presidential candidates to create conditions for conducting free and fare elections and excluding opportunities to falsify peoples will”.

According to the same source, the “legal rights of “For Fair Elections 2010” observers were violated and they were deprived of conducting full-fledged observation of early elections (…) During the period of early elections there were multiple cases of enforced voting orchestrated by heads and managers of enterprises and organizations and teachers of higher educational establishments”.
Besides the illegal behavior during early elections, the precinct election commissions have denied observers to follow a transparent vote count procedure, denying them the possibility of observing the content of the ballots.

As already happened before, representatives of the majority of opposition political parties and civil organizations were not included in territorial and district election commissions.

The Belarus “Fair World” Party also states in its Campaign report Lukashenko, who is often referred to as ‘Europe’s last dictator’, “has illegally used state mass media and state resources and influenced courts as none of the 430 complains about illegal and unjustified inclusion of  representatives of democratic organizations was complied until now”. At many of the polling stations in violation of the requirements of Election Code “there was no separate vote count for every candidate for early elections, mobile voting, and voting on the Election Day”, the members of the Party added.

Thus, in connection with major violations of Election Code of Belarus and other election legislative acts which took place during the preparation and the conduct of elections on January 19 2010, the Belarus Left Fair World Party considers that “the Election of the President of Belarus cannot be recognized as free and fair”.

During the last two days, hundreds of opposition demonstrators were arrested and grabbed by the police during the violent dispersal of an anti-Lukashenka demonstration in Minsk.
