AKEL strengthens its position in Cyprus Parliamentary elections
Parliamentary elections were held in Cyprus on Sunday 22nd of May, for the election of the 56 Deputies of the House of Representatives. AKEL has managed to increase its percentage by 1,36%, reaching the amount of 32,67%. It has also gained 1 extra Seat in the Parliament reaching the 19 Seats out of the 56.
The first Party was the right-wing DISY with 34,28% while the central-wing DIKO, that participates in the governmental coalition along with AKEL, finished in the third place with 15,76%.
Since the Republic of Cyprus is based in a Presidential system, the results of the Parliamentary elections don’t have a direct impact in the Executive power (President). But in fact the majorities that can be created in the Parliament influence significantly several aspects of the implementation of the tasks of the Executive power. In this framework, an important dimension of the results is that the two political Parties, AKEL and DIKO, that support the progressive government of com Dimitris Christofias have managed to control the half of the Seats of the Parliament, a fact that enables the government to pass legislations through the Parliament more effectively.
AKEL has managed to renew sufficiently its representatives in the House of Representatives since the 10 out of the 19 MP’s were elected for a first time.
