Call for an honourable commemoration of Karl Marx

Call for an honourable commemoration of Karl Marx

Today, on occasion of Karl Marx 199th birthday, the President of the European Left, Gregor Gysi, is addressing citizens, initiatives and institutions in order to call for an honourable commemoration of the 200th birthday of Karl Marx next year.

Karl Marx is one of the greatest personalities in German history. He has enriched philosophy and economics in an outstanding manner. He coined an impressive and until today in every aspect highly relevant analysis of the capitalist mode of production. His widely read writings play a distinguished role in human history, especially “The Capital”.

He is one of the most prominent Germans worldwide. During his lifetime, he had to go into exile in London, because he was not tolerated in Germany. Also his friendship with Friedrich Engels is unique.

I will propose to the Political Secretariat, to the Executive Board, and to the General Assembly of the European Left to take initiative and support efforts to honour and commemorate Karl Marx all over Europe.

Also, I call for the organization of a tribute to Karl Marx to all citizens, initiatives and institutions in Germany, partly to make up leeway. A commemoration does not exclude a critical analysis of the later abuses of the works of Karl Marx. This may and should be part of the tribute.

In particular, I address all citizens and responsible persons in Trier, the birthplace of Karl Marx, to organize a ceremony and to invite important national and international personalities. I am willing to support an initiative with the aim of giving the name Karl Marx to a German university.

On the occasion of the 200th birthday of Karl Marx, it is about time that the so far unnamed University of Trier is named after the most famous son of the city, which is Karl Marx.
