We celebrate March 8th 2017 in a historical and political context full of difficulties for women throughout Europe. In this context the growth of far right and populism in the Western world as a result of the reactionary policies of most European governments, exerts a negative influence on our struggle for equality.

“There's a valley in Spain called Jarama

It's a place that we all know so well

We saw a peaceful valley turn to hell”

On the second premature repayment of an IMF credit installment by Portugal, the President of the European Left, Gregor Gysi, declares:

"The Portuguese government which is supported by two left-wing parties after the € 2 Bn of November 2016 again prematurely repayed an installment of € 1.7 Bn to the International Monetary Fond (IMF). Thus, the country already repayed half of the received amount from the so called euro rescue programme.

On the ongoing debates and developments regarding Greece, Gregor Gysi, President of the European Left, declares:

Education Working Group
Education plays an important role for training citizens and consequently for the society’s collective consciousness.
Nowadays, the neo-liberal objective is to shape women and men interested only by themselves. Education is strongly utilitarian, subjected to free-market imperatives, and above all centred on skills allowing for a quick adaptation to new situations in a competitive economy.

Before the meeting of the Eurogroup Gregor Gysi, President of the Party of the European Left, explains: “Before the important elections in the Netherlands, France and Germany the pressure on the Greek government shall rise. The German Finance Minister Schäuble is still playing the hardliner, including dangerous mind games regarding an euro-exit of Greece and demands on a further exacerbation of the austerity policy. Reasonable are other steps: the ongoing programme review has to be finished as soon as possible, without IMF if needed.
