(Oral working translation into English) Welcome here in Berlin to everybody! - This is our first discussion. It will be an experimental one. It is the first time that we are discussing after the foundation of our party about its political direction. Within the next hours we will be looking for the most fruitful way to do so. We are coming from different histories, so all of us are different in organising the discussion. Even more experimental than our debate will be my report.
The Party of the European Left has with great satisfaction taken note of the Advisory Opinion "On legal consequences of the construction of a wall in the Occupied Palestinian Territory", published by the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on 9 July, 2004.
The Party of the European Left supports the efforts for the peaceful solution of the Cyprus problem that will lead to the reunification of Cyprus and its people and will put an end to the occupation and division of the island.
In Europe and in the world, there is growing resistance to wars, destruction of the welfare systems, arms build-up and market radicalism. We of the European left are part of the movements for a different policy. We are convinced that another world, another Europe is possible: democratic, social, ecological, feminist, peaceful - a Europe of solidarity.
(working translation; it depends on the spoken words!) Dear Comrades and Friends, It is a great pleasure to welcome you at a Berlin meeting of European left parties at the beginning of the New Year. I would like to thank you for following the invitation of the PDS. I believe we are all well prepared for intensive debates during the following two days, and I know we deeply wish to develop common positions.
