Wrong Direction in European Policy

Wrong Direction in European Policy

The European Council, meeting in Brussels on 19 and 20 October 2017, once again missed the opportunity to give Europeans common economic, social and ecologically sustainable prospects. While working together on military and armament issues, the social, ecological and economic questions remain with vague political declarations of intent. The current situation in Catalonia, where the EU have to play a role in political mediation to set off a dialogue, is completely ignored. Also the one-sided support given to the Spanish government on the fringe of the summit does not ensure the necessary de-escalation. In view of further intensification in this conflict, the Council is questioning its own existence as institution with this ignorance. At the same time, a common asylum system is being discussed and Libya is to be made to the next bulwark against migration with its militia and warlords, while the EU states wanted to make a paltry € 175 million available for combating causes of migration. In order to implement their foreclosure fantasies, the EU does not shy away from the alliance with doubtful rulers, first with Turkey now with Libya. But with the closure of migration routes no problem is solved, no cause of migration is effectively combated. The path which the EU and FRONTEX have embarked together for many years now, is the wrong path. The main approach must be the protection of the right of asylum and therefore to create legal possibilities and, at the same time, to combat economic, ecological and social causes of migration. Once again, misleading political signals have been send from Brussels. European citizens ask for an EU to find answers to current challenges.
